How to care your Sugar Glider

16 August 2009

It is very easy to feed your sugar glider; no special foods are required. You probably already have all the foods you need on hand. However, you need to realize that sugar gliders can be picky eaters—they’re a lot like kids that way. They’ll love one food for weeks and then suddenly they won’t touch it. You have to take the time to find out what they like and offer them a variety of foods. They also need fresh water daily. Some owners feed their gliders once a day at dusk, while others will feed twice a day. However you decide to do it depends upon your particular glider.

Which method you choose depends upon your particular sugar glider. If he’s still hungry in the morning, give him a small amount of food then and more in the evening. It is most important, though, to make sure your sugar glider has proper nutrition. If it doesn’t, the glider could develop a vitamin deficiency. You will immediately recognize the signs if your glider begins to drag his hind legs. If the deficiency is not immediately corrected with liquid vitamin supplements, the glider will soon lose the use of his hind legs and die. If you give your glider too much protein, your glider may become obese and less active.

Counteract this by giving him more fresh fruits and vegetables. If you give them too much fat, your gliders may have breeding problems; if the mother gets too much fat, her babies will be born with fat rolling in their eyeballs. Avoid this by giving your gliders a low-fat diet, which is the bet diet for them. Sugar gliders need a diet of 75% fruit and 25% protein.

So what should you feed your sugar glider? Here is a list of foods that sugar gliders like:

pineapple, peaches, apples, pears, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, melons, grapes, papaya, apricots, oranges, fruit juices, blueberries, dried fruit, fruit jams, and assorted baby food. Give them about 3grams of fruit at each feeding. Do not use canned fruits in place of fresh because they contain preservatives and refined sugar. Gliders also like corn, sweet potatoes, squash, raisins, carrots, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dried peas, low-fat deli turkey and ham, and almonds; you can give them from 2-4 grams of these.

They also like to have 1 peanut in the shell per day, mealworms. 1.5 grams of dog kibble, and 10 grams of hard boiled egg

You can also feed your sugar gliders 2 teaspoons of something called Leadbeaters Mix. You need:

Warm Water 450ml

Honey 450ml

Shelled boiled eggs 3

High-Protein baby cereal 75g

Sustage (Vitamin supplement) 3 teaspoons

Mix:

Add warm water to container, slowly add the honey and mix in.

Blend eggs (no shells) until mushy.

Add 1/2 honey/water mix to the blended eggs, blend.

Add the remainder of honey/water mix, blend.

Add sustagen and half the baby cereal, blend

Add the remaining baby cereal

Blend for 1.5 minutes to make mixture lump free.
